1929 Netherlands Indies 50 Gulden "Coen" Note — De Javasche Bank
If you love vintage paper money with real presence, this bold orange 50 Gulden note is hard to walk past. Issued by De Javasche Bank on 29 Januari 1929 in Batavia, it carries the well-known portrait of Jan Pieterszoon Coen framed in an ornate oval — a design collectors often call the "Coen" type. The reverse features a detailed engraving of a colonial-era building alongside multi-language legal text (Dutch, Chinese, Arabic, Javanese), a hallmark of Netherlands Indies currency from this period.
This particular example carries Signature #22 (Michelsen) — a scarcer signature variety on this type that doesn't surface often. PMG population data backs that up: only 38 examples graded at this exact PMG 25 (Very Fine), with 113 total in higher grades.
