1928 Netherlands Indies 100 Gulden "Coen" Note — De Javasche Bank
For collectors who love vintage paper with real weight and presence, this 100 Gulden note is one of the more imposing pieces to come out of Dutch colonial Indonesia. Issued by De Javasche Bank on 4 Februari 1928 in Batavia, it carries the same striking Jan Pieterszoon Coen portrait framed in heavy black engraving that defines the "Coen" series — this time in the larger, higher denomination format. The reverse shows an engraved colonial-era building alongside multi-language legal text (Dutch, Chinese, Arabic, Javanese).
This example carries Signature #20 (Van Rossem) and comes back from PMG with an honest note on the holder: minor rust — nothing that takes away from the note's strong overall presentation at Choice Very Fine. Population-wise, PMG has graded 74 examples at this exact 35 grade, with 297 in higher grades. Not the rarest note out there, but 100 Gulden notes from this era genuinely are harder to find — most saw heavy circulation use and didn't survive in collectible condition.
